Story: Arylene Westlake-Jennings
Dane Richardson’s curving horseshoe-type design for this multi-level stunner left one of the judging panel speechless – no wonder it picked up the top award for design excellence
THE imposing facade of this South- West home and its postcard-like views are so phenomenal it forces the Yallingup coast to take a back seat to its innovative design.
Created by Dunsborough design practice Dane Design Australia, the property is located on a steeply sloping hill less than 150m from the beach, with extensive ocean views.
The residence sits on a large and irregular-shaped 900sq m block and building designer Dane Richardson had more than a few obstacles to overcome before tackling this project.
But his efforts saw the home winning the overall Design Excellence prize at the Building Designers Australia WA Awards 2012.
In describing his design to the judging panel, Dane says the first thing he knew he had to do was capitalise on the orientation.
“I had a rare opportunity to have the building facing north, capture amazing views and protect the home from the southwesterly winds and afternoon summer sun,” he says.
“The next aspect was to work with the horrible triangular boundary alignment. My solution was to curve the building plan to create a horseshoe-type arrangement facing north, protecting the occupants and maximising the views.”
Dane says the owners also gave him free rein with most of the layout, outlining the rooms and spaces they thought they needed.
